Memorial Herman CEO Dan Wolterman

Spent the day with Memorial Herman CEO Dan Wolterman.  Dan's an amazing man who has accomplished tremendous success in his career.  He has survived personal illness, grew up as one of 9 children and somehow balances the constant pressures of running one of the nation's leading health care systems with volunteering his time to such causes as Chairing the 2011 Senior Games and being home for dinner with his own family each night.  I was truly impressed with his passion for everything he throws himself into along with the tremendous respect he has for each and every member of his team.  He has great energy and moves very fast...Drinks lots of water, eats very little...Seems to be a constant theme with everyone we've profiled so far...Is constantly praising those around him...Didnt check his BB once during the time I was with him and didnt take a call...Blew me away as he says he receives around 150 emails a day...First profile subject where I didnt get to ride in the car with them and ask questions...He's got a 2 seater convertible (wouldnt have guessed that) so Wyatt had to do it since I dont know how to work a camera...Highlight of the day was meeting the Life Flight team.  Amazing group that are saving lives every day throughout Houston.  They operate 6 choppers 24/7 and are truly the best at what they do...While we were on the roof of the hospital, we just happened to be there when 2 Life Flight Copters were landing with critically injured children on board.  It was absolutely heartbreaking to see these young kids being wheeled out of the helicopters and rushed into the Level 1 trauma unit.  However, these kids have a chance to make it and that chance comes from having Life Flight available in Houston.  Memorial Herman receives ZERO funding for the Life flight program they provide to the city and its residents....Amazing....

Brock Wagner - CEO & Founder of St.Arnolds Brewery

Brock Wagner is the kind of guy you just want to hang out with and enjoy a beer...Which is great, because as the founder and CEO of St.Arnolds Brewery that's pretty much just what we did on our day.  He's cool, quirky, supremely intelligent and grounded.  He's got a great wife and family, who by the way twitter, facebook, play wii golf and live on their ipods and iphones so there was alot of tech talk.  With Brock, I got the feeling that you could throw just about any topic out there and he'd be able to pick it up and run with it.  While spending time at the bar he has in his brewery, you could tell that this was a guy who truly loves what he does and that a large part of that love is the time he gets to spend with his staff at the end of each day, enjoying their product, talking and building a sense of community within the St.Arnolds brand.  He's taking on his biggest risk to date with the expansion into a new multi-million dollar brewery being built just outside of downtown, yet seems remarkably calm and confident that things are pretty much just as they should be.  I was really impressed when I found out that he was the one that bought the legendary Cactus Records Store and has revived it just down the block from its original location.  Brock seems to appreciate the simple things, family, music, beer and the notion that quality and purpose can provide success, security and acheivement.

Ceron

I had a lot of misconceptions about Ceron going into this day...Pompous, arrogant, over-priced, style over substance...Ok, I wasnt exactly a fan to start out.  I also had no idea what we'd have to talk about all day, but, I admit, I was intrigued by the guy enough to do the profile and I'm glad I did.  I learned a ton and after spending an entire day with him and I can now honestly say that I really like the guy.  First off, the guy works hard.  Really hard.  He's up early and gets done late.  He's got a zillion things going on at all times.  He's on his feet all day, dealing with very demanding clients and always making the rounds each night to keep himself out there.  He's a one man brand.   He's bright, very bright, has great business sense and he really understands his clientele.   He's about family and very much about taking care of those around him.  We talked alot about the economy and the effect it's having on his business and him personally.  The pressures of it all and how it's humbled him and forced him to reinvent himself and be in tune with his clients.  He cried over the loss of his grandmother, which I related to having lost my father so young and he spoke deeply about his brothers, relationships and the toll it all takes.  I got to understand the value of service he provides and that it's much more for both him and his clients than an expensive haircut.  When you put aside the Dolce & Gabana wardrobe and some of the off the wall comments, Ceron is a just a guy in the service business.  An entrepreneur working each day to keep his business going and growing.  It's not glamorous.

Maurice Taylor - Episode 2

We met Maurice Taylor at his home in Memorial. My biggest worry pulling up was that he’d bail on the idea of us following him around all day with a camera and hounding him with all sorts of questions and I’d be left standing outside his house ringing the doorbell for an hour.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and at 10 am as agreed, Maurice’s wife Tiffany invited us inside. Tiffany was very sweet and like most mothers of a 15month old, tired. While I waited for Mo to come downstairs and tell me what he had in store for the day, I nosily looked around. Holiday cards, tree still up in the living room even though it was jan 24th and lots of pictures of kids and family. Newspapers and mail in a pile on the kitchen counter, TV on, laptop open to google homepage… Looked like a very normal and happy bunch. Oh, I almost forgot about the giant Rotweiller out back….Not as tough as you’d think when you see him playing with a couple of the families Yorkies.

We had our best conversation of the day in the storeroom of sneaker lab. As Maurice chowed down on his puny lunch, we talked about his goals, motivation, inspiration and how he has seized the opportunities provided to him as an NBA player to learn, grow and expand his visions for himself and his family. He is very bright, very grounded and very driven. His role model is Magic Johnson, a man who has achieved even greater success in business than he did on the court.

Greg Gets Slammed

Ok, let's get this out of the way first....There is nothing "fake" about Professional Wrestling...Yes, the outcomes are predetermined, but that does not take away from the incredible athleticisim and toughness of these guys (and gals).  These moves hurt.  The mat has no give, the ropes are tight and anytime a guy the size of Booker T slams you, trust me, you're going to feel it for days.  That being said, I loved it and spending the day with one of my wrestling idols was an amazing experience.  Booker has incredible stories and it was really difficult for me to stay on track and ask him good "profile" questions versus just talking wrestling like a lifelong fan.  That being said, we did talk a ton of wrestling and hanging out in his billiards room surrounded by championship belts and wrestling momoribilia hearing some of his stories was a thrill.
